After completing my medical degrees at the University of N.S.W. I spent 2 years at Concord and Auburn Hospitals completing my training.
I ventured into general practice in Auburn before setting up my own practice in Newport, where I remained for 15 years. During that time I also had 3 children.
I then took a sabbatical, swapping the challenges of general practice for the challenges of indigenous health in remote areas. As a senior student I had been inspired by working at Murrumbridge, an aboriginal community in the far west of N.S.W, a great learning and cultural experience, I had harboured a desire to further that experience once my children were old enough for me to leave for short periods.
I spent my first 18 months in the Northern Territory working as a locum in the Tennant Creek Aboriginal Medical Clinic and in the Tiwi Islands before joining the Central Australia Remote Health Service in Alice Springs as a District Medical Officer. From here I would fly to remote indigenous communities for several days to a week, conducting General Practice clinics.
It was an exceptionally rewarding experience. The medicine was demanding, as were the hours, but I loved the work, the people and the stunning desert landscapes.
In 2001 I joined the Royal Flying Doctor Service Womens’ GP Program, flying to Lightning Ridge each month to provide GP clinics for women. During my 14 years with the program, I expanded the service to include the Aboriginal community at Goodooga and the mining community at Grawin.
I was also involved with health education at Lightning Ridge High School, school clinics and as assistance to the school counsellor.
In 2001, I re-established my general practice at Mona Vale as I missed regular general practice and with the goodwill of my patients, I was able to continue working part-time in the N.T. and rural NSW. By 2014 I felt it was time to hand over the reins of this work. Since then I have concentrated on further developing our general practice to provide a comprehensive range of medical services for our patients.
General practice is a passion of mine. It has given me wonderful experiences and relationships and a real sense of contributing to my patients’ health and lives. I enjoy paediatrics, women’s health, aged care and mental health, but overall I enjoy all aspects of general practice.
I am very proud to work with such a wonderful team of highly committed professionals at Mona Vale Medical Practice with the shared goal of achieving best patient outcomes by delivering quality care as a team in a very caring, non-judgemental environment.
Outside of my work, I continue my lifelong passion of playing the piano, sailing, watching rugby union, reading a good novel and above all, time with my family.
